Is Olive Oil Suitable for Indian cooking style?

The olive tree is surely the richest gift of Heaven!

One of the most important things that will affect the flavor of your Indian food are the cooking oils that you use. It’s known that the common cooking oils in Indian food are ghee & mustard oil

Others which are also used are likes of Coconut oil, peanut oil & sesame oil (til). Modern arrivals sunflower oil, rapeseed (canola) and soybean and so on.

Beyond the reach

Why olive oil is beyond the reach of Indian kitchens? Let’s find out!

High rice

Normally, the price range for 1 liter of olive oil in India is 300INR to 900INR ($5 to $15) which is beyond the capacity of major Indian population.

Due to high import duty, the price of olive oil remains high all the year

Smoking Point

But a fact to know about oil is to take into note the smoking point. The smoke point is the temperature at which any fat starts to smoke.

Apart from the taste, the advantage of all cooking oils used in Indian cooking is that they have high smoke points (above 232C / 450F) this means the meat and other ingredients will ‘seal’ very quickly when cooked.

For deep frying the the smoking point of olive oil is 160 – 180 degrees which is quite unsuitable for Indian cooking styles. Where as for saute on high heat the ideal temperature is 120 degrees

Amazing for Health

On the other hand, olive oil is a great option to use for cooking because of its amazing health benefits and distinctive flavor.

This oil has been used for centuries, but has become extremely popular recently due to studies which have proven just how healthy this oil is

Help in preventing strokes – Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat which has been lower your bad cholesterol (LDL) and blood pressure, while raising the good cholesterol (HDL) and helps protect against strokes

The main thing to keep in mind is that olive oil has low smoke point. This means oil will start to smoke at high temperatures.

It may also destroy the flavor of the food, especially the majority of Indian cooking styles goes with high temperatures

Here are some tips to cooking with olive oil

One way to compensate for the low smoke point is to combine olive oil with a high heat oil such as ghee (clarified butter) or canola oil for a healthier choice.

This raise the smoke point while still allowing you to enjoy the health benefits and flavor of cooking with olive oil – extra virgin or virgin varieties.

Since olive oil has become popular lately, and is available in every Indian grocery store in India, you may have noticed quite a variety to choose from.

Have you ever noticed why every unique brand of olive oil have different taste?

The flavor of oil can vary depending upon where the olives grown, so if you find you don’t like the flavor of a particular brand, simply switch to another.
